The Photography Business. Photographers have Coffee. Photographer Damages Tendon Lost Work

Crazy days!

I had coffee with a Brighton based photographer who has a studio in London. Busy and doing well he’s one of few photographers I know at the moment for whom the photography business works well. He specialises in product shots. He’s focusing on high end photography for big brands. that’s where people have spending power with big advertising campaign budgets. Aim high. He uses a digital back and a variety of high quality digital lenses. He has exceptional Photoshop skills to compliment his studio photography skills.

Walking up Waterloo Street I hear someone shout my name. There is a man on his balcony with a big bandage on his leg. He is a wedding photographer who has just returned from Spain. He has torn his Achilles tendon whilst playing football. This weekend’s wedding job is canceled, the deposit is lost. It’s a big financial loss. Will be several weeks before he is fit to work again.

Looking out of the window I see another Brighton photographer with his camera dangling on his chest. He is out hunting for photographs! There’s plenty of good light. He has a massive collection of images covering Brighton over the last few decades. I’ll have to ask him how many sales he’s getting from the website.

Bad news today, I find out a popular artist who used photography and digital manipulation in his artwork has passed away this week at a tender age.

A studio and location photographer sends a text, he didn’t go and test the Mamiya ZD. Will he go in the future? Will he think twice about buying this outsider camera? Why did Mamiya get it so wrong? The man from Peartree rentals said he would rather the photographer buy a Phase One back than the Mamiya ZD. Cheap but not cheerful I guess!

Meanwhile, one other chap is sitting at home tearing his hair out trying to pull in work for the coming weeks. Doing VAT returns to pass the time. I suggested he give it up and start fresh next monday. He has just bought a transparency scanner so perhaps a return to film to put the buzz back where it belongs.

The photography business.
