Portraits of the artist Dan Baldwin in his Brighton studio (before he moved out of town).

Images shot on black and white film (then scanned). I’ve not used the Canon 30D on its black and white setting so don’t know what the feel of the images would be. However, with film I wanted to get a certain gritty and grainy feel which I achieved. I have yet to make a print in the darkroom.

They were shot handheld, on slow shutter speeds resulting in the blur and movement, in available light using a 35-135mm Canon lens. I think it was 400ASA film. I wanted the grainy feel which would come with the low light also. I feel good shooting under these conditions. I also find that with numerous shots there are ones which work well in series. Maybe a one and half hour session in a cold studio. I asked Dan to paint as per a normal session for him in the studio and I worked around him, I prefer working this way, it’s easier to become invisible. There are quite a number of images to edit. Although I haven’t produced a contact sheet I prefer to edit with contact sheets. It’s easy to see how the shoot developed. You can see continuity and changes. Contact sheets were an essential editing tool at one time!

  1. I really enjoy this work. I love medium format, although just recently started using large format so I need to get back to my mamiya clearly.

  2. *impressed*
these 3 images are really promising for the rest!
love the “feeling” of action and the artist being absorbed by his work you recreated.
